CARCINOID AWARENESS MONTH

PCCAN celebrated May 2017 as Pennsylvania’s yearly Carcinoid Cancer Awareness Month with a resolution sponsored by Speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, the Honorable John Perzel.  A rally in Harrisburg at the State Capitol Rotunda kicked off the month with Dr. Harold Harvey and Dr. Darrell Kirch of the Hershey Medical Center, Speaker Perzel and a few of PCCAN’s members as featured speakers.

In addition to those mentioned, PCCAN recognizes the support of the following people and organizations:

Monica Warner & The Carcinoid Cancer Foundation
Maryann Wahmann & The Carcinoid Cancer Awareness Network, Inc.
Melissa Johnson and R. J. Davis & Co.
Jim Weiveris, Metro NY Carcinoid Support Groups
Kara Beem, Esq.
Dr. Simon Bronner & Sally Jo Bronner

Unable to attend the rally in Harrisburg, Terri Davis of Philadelphia still had the desire to promote Carcinoid Cancer awareness.  Her desire led her to host a Carcinoid Cancer Awareness Booth at a book fair in downtown Philadelphia.  Terri handed out literature, educated passersby about the disease, and sold awareness merchandise for the benefit of PCCAN.  What a great example of dedication and innovation.  Way to go Terri!

Remember the Zebra

In medical school, students are taught “when you hear hoof beats think horses,” meaning when presented with a symptom a physician should consider the most common causes associated with those symptoms.

This adage works well when the disease is a common condition.  But for people with uncommon ailments such as Carcinoid Cancer, this often results in years of misdiagnosis due to symptoms that frequently mimic more common diseases.

The medical community must remember to think beyond horses when they hear hoof beats because the approaching animal could be the less common zebra. This is why the message of the Carcinoid Cancer community is  REMEMBER THE ZEBRA.
